The New York Sour is an interesting looking cocktail because it supposedly floats a little red wine on top of a whiskey-colored base – only it must depend what exact wine and whiskey you’re using, because for me, the red wine makes a beeline for the bottom.

But this drink also bears the distinction of being a good thing to do with cheap whiskey and cheap red wine. You can’t say that about many things in life.
The flavor is similar to that of a traditional whiskey sour, but with the grape from the wine putting a twist on both the tartness and the sweetness. It’s… hard to describe, so you just have to make one and try it.

Ingredients
- 2 ounces of blended whiskey
- Juice of half a lemon
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Red wine
Instructions
- Fill a cocktail shaker haflway with ice.
- Pour in the whiskey, lemon juice and powdered sugar.
- Shake until chilled.
- Strain the mixture into a whiskey sour or highball glass.
- Top it the rest of the way with red wine.
- Garnish with a slice of lemon and a cherry, and serve.
