September Morning Cocktail Recipe

By MixThatDrink

The September Morning cocktail is one of those easy-going, highly drinkable cocktails that are just fun and tasty. Rum, brandy and grenadine form the basis of this flavor, with the egg white marrying the ingredients and giving the whole drink a lift, and the little bit of lime juice adding a note of deep citrus.

The traditional recipe calls for a raw egg white; if that worries you, you can use an egg substitute product – as long as it actually contains egg. I haven’t tried this with a vegan egg substitute and can’t vouch for whether it’ll produce any foam. If you have, please leave a comment and let me know how it worked.

The September Morning is so named because it’s mellow and warming. It’s great to savor all by itself, but you can also pair it with a meal. Try the Raspberry Brie Dessert Pizza with Rosemary and Candied Pecans from Completely Delicious. The berry flavors all mix together beautifully while the brie, pecans and rosemary add wonderful contrasts. Or if you want something simpler, try the Chili Lime Chicken from Rasa Malaysia. The lime in the dish brings out the lime in the drink, and the sweet berry flavors from the cocktail calm the hot chili in the chicken.

If you like this drink, take a look at the Fairy Belle cocktail and the Casino Royale. The Fairy Belle has egg and grenadine with apricot brandy and gin. The Casino Royale uses maraschino liqueur for its hint of berry flavor.

  • 1 1/2 ounce light rum
  • 1 teaspoon cherry brandy
  • 1/2 ounce lime juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon grenadine

Fill a shaker halfway with ice cubes. Pour all ingredients into the shaker and shake well. Strain the mixture into a chilled cocktail glass. Give the egg a minute to settle to the top and form a layer of foam, then serve.
